Geographic Information Systems, or GIS, is a computer technology that
combines geographic data and other types of information to generate visual
maps and reports. This will provide immediate timesaving to many city
departments and allow the public direct access to information. “GIS
is a method to visualize, manipulate, analyze, and display spatial data--maps
with intelligence," said GIS coordinator, Michael Heslin. “GIS
Maps Online are interactive maps and databases that users can print up
to 11” x 17.” “Users can also save maps as finished
Adobe PDF files, which can be printed, saved to disk, or e-mailed,”
he said.
Benefits of GIS map technology include the ability to look up a property
by the assessor parcel number (APN); print full property records; easily
research Zoning, General Plan, Trash pick-up day, Street Sweeping schedule,
and school locations; examine Flood Zone Boundaries, and the ability to
overlay any combination of GIS layers.
