Moreno Valley selects new City Manager

The Moreno Valley City Council has announced that it has appointed Robert Gutierrez as City Manager, subject to final negotiations and approval of a mutually acceptable contract. Gutierrez would be the city’s chief executive responsible for implementing City Council policies, overseeing day-to-day operations, and managing the 430-employee organization’s $210 million budget.

Gutierrez is from the City of Pomona where he was appointed Assistant City Manager in October 2001. Gutierrez is an experienced local government manager. In addition to his work in Pomona, Gutierrez has served as City Manager in La Puente and City Manager/City Clerk of La Habra Heights.

“The City Council believes that Robert’s experience and deep knowledge of local government will be an asset to Moreno Valley and that he is the right professional to help us successfully address the challenges and opportunities that Moreno Valley will face in the next few years,” Moreno Valley Mayor Richard Stewart said. “We conducted a nationwide recruitment and attracted substantial talent from around the country. At the end of the day, we found Robert’s qualifications to be outstanding. We believe he will be an asset to the city organization and our community,” Stewart said.

“This position will allow me the opportunity to work in a stable and progressive organization dedicated to serving its citizens and improving their quality of life,” Gutierrez said. “I’m very enthusiastic about Moreno Valley. It’s a great community – a diverse community and I look forward to helping the city achieve its goals,” he said.

Gutierrez was born in Pomona and grew up in Azusa. He earned a Masters Degree in Public Administration from California State University, Fullerton and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science from California State Polytechnic University in Pomona. Gutierrez, who begins his duties on January 1, 2006, resides with his family in La Verne.
