Update on library services

The Moreno Valley Public Library has been closed indefinitely due to water damage and mold problems. With the temporary loss of the use of the library building, the city has been exploring various alternatives to provide library services in the community.

The city is currently in negotiations to lease space where limited library services will be provided temporarily. It is anticipated that this temporary library site will open in January 2006 and provide the following library, children’s and electronic services:

  • Display a significant portion of the children’s collection which represents 65% of the library’s circulation.

  • Provide reference service for reference materials and audio visual materials

  • Provide public computers for use by children and adults

  • Provide online public access catalog computers

  • Provide additional electronic database resources

Library staff recently completed packing the entire collection, which must be removed from the building before mold removal can begin. Sources of water intrusion have been identified but further testing needs to be done after the abatement is completed to determine other sources of water intrusion. As a result of the damage, extensive repairs to the building are likely necessary.

The bookmobile and motor home in the library parking lot will continue until library services in the leased space are available. In addition, three library assistants from the library are working at the Perris Branch of the Riverside County Library system where many of our patrons are going for library services.
