Raise the wall event
A “Raise the Wall” event is taking place Wednesday, February 2, 2005, to celebrate the construction of the first home being built in Moreno Valley as part of Moreno Valley’s YouthBuild, Inc. program. The event takes place Wednesday, February 2 at 11 a.m. at 12130 Graham Street, (between Hemlock and Ironwood). The YouthBuild program provides academic and construction education, support services and job skills to disadvantaged youth.
YouthBuild shows young people how to build new homes for people in need, and new lives for themselves. Each year, youths who participate in YouthBuild receive a combination of classroom academic and job skills development and on-site training in a construction trade. With support from HUD, YouthBuild participants are able to put their newly acquired skills to good use rehabilitating and building housing for low-income and homeless people in their communities.
YouthBuild provides funding to public and private non-profit organizations, that include community-based organizations, community action agencies, state or local housing agencies, community development corporations, and any other entity including States, and units of general local government eligible to provide education and employment training. More than $300 million in grants have been awarded since the program's inception in 1993 enabling over 8,351 young people to construct or rehabilitate more than 4,935 affordable housing units in their communities.
