Youth basketball team advances to Southern
Moreno Valley Parks and Community Services Department announced today that the Moreno Valley Ballerz youth basketball team has advanced to the Southern California Municipal Athletic Federation (SCMAF) Tournament of League Champions, scheduled for March 29th and 30th, in Carson, California.
“They’re a great team, with solid coaching, and a lot of energy,” said Recreation Supervisor Rick Rhay. “They’ve got a great shot at winning at the Federation tournament.”
The Ballerz, a team of 7th and 8th grade boys, took top honors in the City of Moreno Valley’s annual youth basketball league, winning their final game on Friday night against a tough Lakers team. Their win in Friday’s game qualified them to compete in the Inland Valleys regional Tournament of Champions on March 15th and 16th in Riverside.
The team went on to take first place at the Inland Valleys tournament, beating out 15 other teams from inland cities, finishing with a win against the team from Riverside in a very close contest.
“We’re so proud of our players,” said Coach Angela Tyars of Moreno Valley. “They continue to show a tremendous amount of determination, and they never give up, even when they’re down,” she said.
The SCMAF Tournament of League Champions will feature teams from throughout Southern California. This is the second year in a row that Moreno Valley teams have finished first in the Inland Valleys Tournament, taking the top two spots last year.
