City Welcomes New Human Resources Director

Interim City Manager William L. Bopf has appointed Juris “Sonny” Morkus as the Human Resources Director for the City of Moreno Valley. Morkus was selected after an open and competitive recruitment and will oversee the Human Resources Department and Risk Management Division.

Morkus has 30 years of Human Resources professional experience, including 28 years in the public sector. “Sonny’s extensive experience in managing Human Resources Departments will be a great asset to the City”, said Bopf. “His knowledge of workplace laws and regulations will greatly benefit the employees as well as the City”.

Over the course of his public service career, Morkus has been the Human Resources Director for the Cities of Hemet, Commerce, and Whittier as well as the Human Resources Manager for the City of Arcadia. For the past two years Morkus has been Human Resource Manager for RMA Land Construction where he represented the company in all personnel related matters with various federal regulatory agencies and coordinated the human resources management operations for multiple state offices.

“I am excited to be joining such a dynamic and talented organization”, said Morkus, “and I am looking forward to becoming an integral member of not only the Human Resources Department, but the executive team that leads the City of the Moreno Valley.”

Morkus has a Masters of Public Administration from California State University, Long Beach with an emphasis in Human Resources and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology. He is fluent in the Spanish language. Morkus will begin working for the City of Moreno Valley on Monday, September 27.
