CODE COMPLIANCE OFFICER I Temporary/Part-time Position THE SALARY: $20.63 - $29.05 per hour THE BENEFITS: This is a temporary position and receives no employee benefits. THE POSITION: This is a temporary/part-time grant funded position and will primarily be scheduled to work Monday – Thursday; however, work may include, evening, weekend and holiday shifts. Under the direction of the Code and Neighborhood Services Official, this position will assist with the investigation and enforcement of a wide variety of code violation activities relating to property maintenance, zoning, building, state, county, and city municipal codes. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: Prepare affidavits and court inspection/abatement warrants; investigate cases for nuisance abatement and code violations; perform citywide surveillance, enforcing compliance with city ordinances, permits, and regulations; provide accurate documentation for case files and court action when required; issue citations and testify in court; process abatement of public nuisances; maintain records of investigations and inspections; enforce local zoning codes, including sign regulations; removal of signs and abandoned shopping carts; maintain files relating to code compliance; take photographs of violations; respond to complaints from the public; use personal computer and research code violations and other job related activities; operate a city vehicle; prepare descriptive daily logs, investigative reports, letters, etc., and write neat, accurate, and concise citations; issue citations for parking violations as needed; provide quality customer service; and perform related duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Training and Experience – A high school diploma or equivalent; one year of experience with municipal ordinances and codes involving public contact; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Knowledge and Abilities - Must have knowledge of state and local ordinances and regulations pertaining to abatement procedures; the principles and practices of code compliance and investigative techniques; effective public contact skills; research methods and techniques; regulations and requirements of court evidence; and zoning codes and enforcement of land use matters to include residential, commercial, industrial specific plans and violations of plot plans, and conditional use permits. Must possess the ability to function effectively in stressful and antagonistic situations; prepare thorough and detailed written case reports for code violation documentation; perform assigned duties with minimal supervision; interact professionally with all members of the public, city staff and city council; read and interpret local, state, and federal laws and regulations which relate to housing, zoning, and land use; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; respond promptly to telephone and counter requests and complaints; perform some heavy lifting tasks requiring strength, ability, and coordination; perform basic typing and computer input; and work a flexible schedule, including weekends and holidays. LICENSES & CERTIFICATES: Must possess a valid California driver’s license; must have a good driving record, clear of any serious moving violations within the past two (2) years. A DMV printout of your driving record may be required. CACEO basic, intermediate and/or advanced certification training is preferred. P.C. 832 Certificate (basic search & seizure) required within six months of employment. SELECTION PROCESS: Following an administrative review of each application, only the most qualified applicants will be invited to an oral interview and/or testing. The successful candidate will be required to pass a medical examination, and to submit original documentation to establish both work authorization and identity (per the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986). Criminal background investigations will be conducted, and, in accordance with our Drug Free Workplace Policy, a Drug Screening Test will be required.
