Food Safety Tips

Follow these tips to ensure that your food stays fresh - and is good for you to eat.

Safe Food from the Store

  1. Don't buy food in damaged containers.
  2. Don't buy cracked, broken or un-refrigerated eggs.
  3. Put raw meat, poultry and seafood in plastic bags before putting in refrigerator.
  4. Pick up milk and cold foods last.

Safe Food at Home

  1. Wash your hands.
  2. Use separate cutting boards.
  3. Thaw frozen foods in refrigerator.
  4. Marinate foods in refrigerator.
  5. Prepare and store food at the proper temperature.

Storage of Food

  1. Put foods in the refrigerator as soon as you get home from shopping.
  2. Store eggs in their original carton in the cooler section of the refrigerator.
  3. Refrigerate any leftover food within 2 hours.
  4. Store leftovers in small containers for quick cooling.
  5. Always cover food to avoid contamination and drying.

Safe Cooking

  1. Never eat any raw foods of animal origin.
  2. Cook meat well, to at least 160 degrees F.
  3. Poultry should be cooked to 180 degrees F.
  4. Fish will flake with a fork when properly cooked.
  5. Cooked egg whites and yolks should be firm, not runny.
