Recycling Your Bottles and Cans

On January 1, 2007 the California Redemption Value (CRV) on Beverage Containers increased to 5 cents for containers under 24 ounces and 10 cents for larger containers. Recycling saves natural resources, conserves energy and extends the life of our landfills. It is up to each of us to help with this process.

Questions You May Have

  • What does this mean and where does the money come from?
When you buy a can of soda, plastic bottled water or glass bottled tea drink for example, you pay for the cost of the drink plus the CRV. When you redeem the container, you get your CRV back. If you purchase a 2-litre bottle of soda you pay 8 cents in CRV because it is a larger beverage container.
  • Why does the State of California charge a CRV in the first place?
The State of California has been collecting CRV on aluminum cans since 1986. In 2000, the legislature included all beverage containers with some exceptions like milk, 100% fruit juice, health drinks, etc. The reason for this is to encourage the citizens of California to recycle these containers and keep them out of the landfills. Last year Californians consumed 18.2 billion beverage containers and recycled 10.6 billion.
  • Why should I recycle my cans and bottles?
Because you get the money back that you initially had to pay when you purchased your drinks, your container is guaranteed to be recycled and it's the right thing to do for the environment.
