New MoVaLEARNS-Mayors Challenge Moreno Valley College Students
Receive Stipends

The 2020-21 cohort of Moreno Valley College (MVC) students taking part in the MoVaLEARNS-Mayors Challenge program have been presented with their first two monthly stipends. Mayor Yxstian Gutierrez and representatives from Moreno Valley College welcomed this year’s students in a kick-off event at City Hall. The innovative partnership between the City and Moreno Valley College provides a $250 monthly stipend for eight months to help 50 qualifying MVC students avoid having to leave school for a low-wage job just to pay the bills.
"Our residents should never have to choose between paying the bills and getting an education," said Mayor Gutierrez. "Being able to help students stay in school and get their degrees for such a small amount of money is a tremendous return on investment for our entire community."
This summer, MoVaLEARNS-Mayors Challenge was honored by the International City/County Management Association with its Local Government Excellence Award in the category of Community Diversity & Inclusion. MoVaLEARNS was created in 2018 as a pilot project funded by Bloomberg Philanthropies' Mayors Challenge initiative.

Nuevo desafío del Alcalde, MoVaLEARNS- Estudiantes de Moreno Valley College reciben estipendios
La cohorte 2020-21 de estudiantes de Moreno Valley College (MVC) que participan en el programa MoVaLEARNS – un desafío del alcalde, han recibido sus dos primeros estipendios mensuales. El alcalde Yxstian Gutiérrez y representantes de Moreno Valley College dieron la bienvenida a los estudiantes de este año en un evento inaugural en el Ayuntamiento. La asociación innovadora entre la ciudad y Moreno Valley College proporciona un estipendio mensual de $250 durante ocho meses para ayudar a 50 estudiantes calificados de MVC a evitar tener que dejar la escuela por un trabajo de bajo salario solo para pagar las facturas.
"Nuestros residentes nunca deberían tener que elegir entre pagar las facturas y recibir una educación", dijo el alcalde Gutiérrez.
